Madhubani paintings originated in Mithila region (present day Bihar). The artform is passed on from generation to generation. Originally the paintings were made of natural organic dyes extracted from plants and roots and other natural things. Now mostly acrylic paints are used. Mostly the women in the village made these paintings to decorate the walls of their houses. The motifs were inspired from their daily life and nature. Gradually the art made its presence in various other places like sarees, canvas, dupattas and so on. This is free hand drawing and is very intricate and lovely.
