Tussar (also spelled tussore) is a wild silk produced by silkworms found in forest ecosystems, primarily in India. It is known for its natural lustrous sheen, subtle slubbed texture, and warm, earthy golden tone. 

This dupatta is made from 100% pure, Silkmark-certified Tussar silk, sourced from sustainable wild silk producers in central India. We do not use blended fabric, ensuring the authenticity and quality of the handwoven base.

Tussar silk is ideal for all seasons. It is naturally breathable and temperature-regulating, making it comfortable for summer wear while retaining warmth during cooler months. The medium weight provides excellent drape without feeling heavy, suitable for daylong festive and casual wear.

Handweaving and hand-embroidery require no power or industrial chemicals, keeping carbon footprints minimal. We support rural artisan communities and preserve traditional crafts, contributing to cultural and economic sustainability. 

The Tussar silk is handwoven in rural weaving centers of Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh by traditional silk weavers. The Kantha embroidery is handstitched by artisan women primarily from Birbhum district in West Bengal.

Every Dupatta is hand-embroidered individually, with each artisan's signature variations visible in stitch placement and motif rendering. The slight irregularities and unique variations in each piece are proof of handcraft authenticity.

Handwoven Tussar fabric is created manually on traditional pit looms by artisans, without power-driven machinery. 

Kantha is a traditional running-stitch embroidery technique originating from West Bengal. Artisans hand-stitch intricate patterns using colored silk threads, creating motifs inspired by nature, folklore, and geometry. The technique involves thousands of tiny, parallel stitches that form the design. Each piece is entirely hand-embroidered by a single artisan, making it a deeply personal craft.

A single Tussar Kantha dupatta takes approximately 4–6 weeks to hand-embroider, depending on the complexity and density of the motif. This includes design preparation, thread selection, and the meticulous hand-stitching process that can involve 20,000–50,000+ stitches per piece.

The embroidery is entirely hand-stitched by artisans. No printing or machine work is involved. This means each piece has slight individual variation in stitch placement and motif rendering—a hallmark of authentic handcraft and proof of its artisanal origin.

Tussar is wild silk with a warm golden tone. Mulberry silk (cultivated) is smoother, more lustrous, and pure white or cream—preferred for bridal and highly formal wear. Tussar is breathable and durable; mulberry is delicate and luxurious. For handwoven pieces, Tussar offers more character; for refined elegance, mulberry excels. 

Yes. Each piece represents 4–6 weeks of artisan labor combined with pure Tussar silk. With proper care, it lasts 10–20 years, becomes softer and more beautiful over time, and can be passed down as an heirloom. 

Kantha is a running-stitch technique using colored threads to create surface designs—subtle, delicate, and folk-inspired. Zardozi uses gold/metal threads for opulent bridal embroidery—heavy and formal. Mirror work adds reflective embellishments for festive wear. 

Handwoven fabric has subtle texture irregularities, slight thickness variations, and natural slubs—visible to the eye and touch. Power-loom fabric is uniformly flat and consistent. There are variations and these are marks of authenticity, not defects.

Handwoven Tussar with Kantha embroidery is labour-intensive, unique, durable, and carries the signature of individual artisans. Machine-embroidered pieces are uniform, faster to produce, and more affordable, but lack the character, variations, and cultural authenticity of handcraft. 

We recommend Dry Cleaning. If handwashing, then wash in cool water (below 30°C) with a mild silk-specific detergent. Avoid wringing or twisting the fabric. Rinse thoroughly in fresh water until the water runs clear. Gently squeeze out excess water and lay flat on a clean, absorbent towel away from direct sunlight to dry.

For fresh stains, blot immediately with a clean, damp cloth using cool water. 

Iron on low to medium heat, preferably on the reverse side, using a cotton pressing cloth to protect the Kantha embroidery.

With proper care, the hand-stitched embroidery is durable and will not loosen significantly. The stitches are knotted securely by artisans. Over decades of wear, minimal wear is natural, but the piece remains wearable and cherished. Many heirloom Kantha pieces are passed down through generations.
